Korean: Palgup Ollyeo Chigi 팔굽올려치기
This elbow strike is easy to learn and, provided that you understand its versatility, is simple to use in a self-defense situation. Just how easy is it to learn and use? Imagine diving into a swimming pool. Upon returning to the surface of the water, chances are that your instinct is to reach up to your head and brush your hair straight back away from your face. Now think about that motion. If you brought your hand straight up to your head and brushed your hair backward, then you have just executed the same motion as the one used to execute an upward elbow strike.
The key to properly executing this elbow strike is to bring your hand straight up toward your head and back over your shoulder so that your hand goes far enough back that you could cup the back of your head with your palm. By doing this, you will have maximized the vertical range of this technique and thus, will be able to strike upward through a target as opposed to just hitting it. In addition, make sure to keep your palm facing the side of your head as you execute this strike in order to relax the bicep and shoulder muscles and produce a faster strike.
