Downward Elbow Strike

Korean:  Palgup Naelyeo Chigi 팔굽내려치기

This is a simple yet highly versatile elbow strike and is particularly effective for grappling and ground fighting.  This elbow strike begins with an expansion of the upper body and relies on the dropping of one’s body weight along with the contraction of the upper body to generate most of its power. A rotation of the hips prior to dropping the elbow can greatly amplify the energy in this strike.

When performing this technique, start with the elbow raised to a position higher than the target. Make sure that your forearm is in a neutral position with the thumb to the rear and pinky to the front (not pronated or supinated). As you drive the elbow straight downward, bend your knees and drop your body weight. At the same time, make sure that you contract the muscles in your arm and upper torso.
